Dancing. Beautiful. Magical. Awe Inspiring. Colorful. Bucket list. Mysterious. These are all words that come to mind when thinking about the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Thousands of people make the journey up to Fairbanks, Alaska each year to try to catch a glimpse of this natural phenomena.
Fairbanks is the best place to go for aurora viewing. We have consistent weather and are located under the auroral oval. Fairbanks is also home to the Geophysical Institute. An institution dedicated to the study of the northern lights.
While the science of the aurora can easily be explained to visiting guests, there are also cultural stories that are relevant to the northern lights. Our friends at the Geophysical Institute have put together a video with Inupiat stories relating to the aurora.
