Learn Dog Mushing!!! Our Alaska State sport.

We designed this tour as an introduction to dog mushing for those who want to experience the activity beyond just riding in the sled. If you want to experience the rush of running your own dog team, this is your chance.

You will meet the sled dogs in our kennel and get plenty of time to get familiar with your team. Your experienced dog mushing guide will present to you the basics of dog mushing, teach how to put on a harness and line up the sled dogs in preparation for take off.

You will mush on a tag sled attached to a well-trained team of Alaska huskies from our race kennel. From a second attached sled, your coach will guide you through a basic training of dog mushing.

Each participant has a full 30 minutes of practicing on the sled runners, learning how to lean into the turns, breaking, and leading your dog team by voice command only. A second 30 minutes you are spending in the sled watching/studying your partner practicing.

You will get great inside into the art of dog mushing and have plenty of time for taking pictures of this great experience.

Please note:

* We have a per person weight maximum of 250 pounds

* Driving directions to the dog kennel will be sent via e-mail after booking is confirmed

Peggy and Torsten Kohnert were born and raised in Germany and later moved to Sweden, where they built their first racing and tour kennel.  Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, they competed in major Scandinavian long-distance races, including the Finnmarkslöpet, Femundløpet, and Pasvik Trail.

After becoming parents to two daughters, they came to Alaska to pursue the world’s most iconic sled dog races.  Torsten went on to compete in the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest seven times, the Copper Basin 300, and several other events, earning top-five finishes and awards such as Best Care of Dogs and the Spirit of the North.  Their growing love for Alaska inspired them to relocate their kennel from Scandinavia to the Last Frontier.

Today, Peggy and Torsten live their dream life surrounded by their dogs and the Alaskan wilderness.  They are passionate about sharing their love for sled dogs, outdoor adventure, and northern living with guests from around the world.
